This is a new retirement house for two avid gardeners. With the garden and qualities of light as the focus, the house aims to be a neutral vessel in which to connect to the immediate and broader environment. A series of screens filter light like the dappled shade of a tree, animating the interior, screening off views of suburbia, and providing solar control.

The dining room opens out to a covered seated area from which a lush, flat tropical garden can be viewed and accessed. A walled raised fernery garden is viewed from the kitchen like a little zen jewel which animates this space. A second fernery garden is housed between the living the bedroom wings, providing a joyous transition and play of light to the middle of the house.

Aiming to be low maintenance and single level (accessed via a lift within the garage), the aim is to enable our clients to enjoy living independently whilst maintaining strong connections with their garden and the broader environment well into their retirement.
