Nestled into the sand dunes of Ohau, this new house is a simple box form with a courtyard at its centre. The owners love of travel mean that time at home is often sporadic. The home is therefore low maintenance: lock up and leave, simple, durable and no fuss.

NZ beach house meets Palladian Villa. Palladian principals of a central courtyard, no corridors and an axial processional route are layered into this rural beach house on the Kapiti Coast. The result is a nontraditional beach home providing sanctuary from the harsh coastal conditions.

The native tussock comes up to meet the house, while the central courtyard creates a defined inner sanctuary garden. Light is pulled into this centre, creating an animated sheltered heart to the house. Looking inwards and across to adjacent spaces provides intimacy and contrast to the broad open views across the dunes.

The entry is an axial processional route, walking through the sand dunes and rising to the entry. Views through to the central courtyard and beyond draw you in.
Rooms are positioned at the corners to shelter the decks between from the prevailing winds.
The kitchen, bedrooms and the workshop surround the courtyard, whole two outdoor rooms, nestled between the courtyard and adjacent rooms, allows for outdoor living. Screens slide across to enable these outdoor rooms to be utilised even in poor weather.
