The cross shaped floor plan is one room wide and based on a nine square grid. With voids at each corner, there are four rooms that extend out from the core, eliminating the need for any corridor space and allowing each room to connect out to outdoor rooms, the sun and the views. At the forms centre is a services core housing the laundry and bathroom on one side and the back wall of the kitchen on the other which connects out to the kitchen dining room.
This new house is situated on a rural site in the Horowhenua that has the blessing of broad views in all directions countered by the curse of strong wind.
The house design focusses on a robust simplicity of form and structure, efficient unconventional planning and the provision for multi-use outdoor rooms that provide protected outdoor living, no matter what way the wind is blowing!
Covered by a simple, wide square hipped roof, synonymous with the 1950’s rural vernacular of the area, the corners of the roof cover two outdoor patios and two outdoor workshop rooms tucked in under each corner of the square roof form. These outdoor rooms engage with the sun and the views whilst also providing shelter from the elements, no matter what the weather.
